Healthcare’s Current Form is Unsustainable
Healthcare's carbon footprint is estimated to be 4.4% net of global emissions. That's about the same as 514 coal-fired power plants. If healthcare were a country, it would be the fifth largest emitter on the planet. Most of those emissions (71%) come from the manufacture, transport and disposal of pharmaceuticals, food products, medical devices, supplies and instruments. The remainder of emissions come from healthcare facilities’ energy consumption and healthcare owned vehicles. Half of healthcare’s climate footprint results from fossil fuel combustion for energy production.
First, do no harm
Climate change due to global warming is increasing severe weather events, heatwaves, fires, floods, injury, and disease. It's ironic that healthcare’s pollution may be hurting the well-being of its own patients. That’s why it is imperative healthcare reduce its climate footprint.
We can make a difference
Healthcare must act to decrease its climate footprint by reducing emissions and supporting a societal transition to clean, renewable energy. While this may seem daunting, we believe that simple measures can have dramatic effects. With this in mind, Tigon Medical offers GreenRepair® products as an alternative to wasteful, single-use orthopedic surgical instruments.
